Although some of the food ain't what
it used to be, it's still a good place to have beer and pizza and just hang
out with your main squeeze. This photo shows the front door entrance,
center rear.

The Subway (not that one - this place was named years
ago) has been referred to as a "dive." Maybe it is, but it's a pretty
fair dive. This Subway is a direct link to the past...
Hosting one of the best juke boxes in the Denver area for
years,
the Subway is a Northwest Denver institution. In years past The
Subway was one of North Denver's more popular authentic pizza joints, along with
The Edgewater Inn (near Sloan's
Lake,)
The Original Carl's Pizza (on 38th Avenue,)
The
Original Gaetano's (on Tejon) and
Carbone's Pizza
- now Lechuga's (also on Tejon St.)
[Owner] "Ray Longo says the Subway Tavern was the first
restaurant in North Denver to fire up a pizza oven 50 years ago"
- from the North Denver Tribune
On the other side of town
The Bonnie Brae Tavern (on So. University Blvd. - southeast Denver) and
Romano's (on Windermere in Littleton) were serving up the pie that
helped make Naples famous. These restaurants/pizza joints have
been around since the 50s - 60s.
Subway is serving Neapolitan/Colorado style pizza, pasta, sandwiches, *Connolles,
salads etc. and your favorite adult beverage.

The last time I ordered food here, the pasta sauce was old-school "maroon gravy" (smooth like enchilada sauce.)
My previous memory was of a sauce that was more old-school traditional. But hey, the owners have operated a successful restaurant
for over 50 years. There's no way to argue with that type of success. It's also
very possible that it was an off night or there was a new chief. |

There is no pretension here, this bar/restaurant is tavern warm and cozy
- a great place to hang out after the game or on an afternoon/night with a friend. This
dark wood and neon tavern with a very old back-bar is located in an Hispanic
neighborhood which used to be (up to the seventies) the "Little Italy" of Denver. The SUBWAY remains unchanged with a picture of Frank Sinatra displayed
behind the bar etc. |

Only in a place like this - that has been around for decades - will a
very-well-earned, well-aged patina be found everywhere one looks.
There's also the deep, rich ambience of collective, lingering emotion and
thought-remnants of customers long gone and those still making the scene.
Say what! |

If you are looking for NY pizza, you might want to go
somewhere else. |
|
Subway pizza is thin old-school Neapolitan pizza with
tangy, traditional pizza sauce, quality cheeses, and served with your
favorite toppings.
Subway's Neapolitan/Colorado Pizzas: 12", 14" and 16"
($8.50 - $17.20.) |

I’m treading carefully here. Many Denverites are as proud of their
Colorado-style pizza as New Yorkers are of theirs. Fugedaboudit! |

The cozy bar with spinner stools is partially divided from
the restaurant's booths/tables. A back room with large TVs has
banquet-type tables and can accommodate large parties.
The Subway is a serious tavern; it's authentic in all
ways...

There is a fine Play for Fun gaming machine at one end of the bar with an
excellent Texas Hold'Em game. |
