*Brewery Bar 3 |
|
|
|
THE BREWERY BAR ll -
150 Kalamath St. Denver, CO 80223; 303-893-0971 |
|
THE BREWERY BAR ll on Kalamath
is a "working man's bar" in an industrial area. It's fairly basic
with a lively, active bar. Mexican food and Margaritas - at
reasonable prices - are what it's all about. Happy-hours and daily
specials are offered. |
|
*THE BREWERY BAR III - 9228 S. Park Meadows Dr. Lone
Tree, CO 80124; 303-708-9333 |
|
THE BREWERY BAR III is located in a peripheral area
of the Park Meadows Mall, South of Denver. For a mall property, the
Brewery Bar lll is comfy and cozy. The restaurant consists of a
large dining room with comfortable booths and tables, and a dim/bright bar
area with: the bar, booths and tables bathed in the light of colored
Christmas-style bulbs, it's soothing. The long bar is active, under
a bank of TV.s. Once again the focus is on Mexican food, Margaritas
and... |
|
As of April '09 the Brewery was offering Happy Hour
specials: "$2 well drinks, house wine and all domestic beer, $3.50
margaritas. Half price appetizers. Free chips and salsa served."
Happy Hour Monday - Friday 3 - 6 p.m. |
|
The Chili Rellenos have been a favorite of many folks over
the years, |
|
The style is Tex-Mex / Southwest Mexican. No gourmet
food: average food, average prices. When we were at Brewery lll in
April '09 we were served one of the best Chips & Salsa appetizers ever.
It was at the Happy Hour with free Chips & Salsa. The salsa was
home-made fresh and the chips were light and delicate. We were told
that they were Tostitos, oh well...they still were tasty. I'm not
Hispanic so my appreciation of "chips" might be skewed. I still
prefer a lighter chip. |

GRANDPA'S BURGER HAVEN |
23 S Federal Blvd
Denver, CO 80219 |
|
303-936-4463 |
|
|
|
This McDonald's-like fast food joint serves a tasty 6"
burger / double-burgers with tomato, onion, lettuce and pickle. You
can pretty much customize your order. The burgers are very tasty -
not necessarily high-quality - but nevertheless tasty. The meat
patties are thin. The food is cooked behind glass; you can watch
your slice of cheese melt on the patty as it cooks. Fries, Onion
Rings, Shakes, Malts etc. are on the menu.. There is no indoor
seating, just a few picnic tables outside. You can eat in your
parked car. |

JJ CHINESE SEAFOOD RESTAURANT |
|
2500 W. Alameda Ave. |
|
Denver, Colorado 80219 |
|
(303-934-8888) |
|

The first thing one sees, besides the door, when entering
this modest restaurant is a wall of live fish. Live EEL,
Crab, Shrimp, Lobster,
Talapia, and more are on display in the tank. The tank is
as clean and pristine as a home aquarium. These fish/crustaceans are also
on the menu. The menu(s) that mention “Cantonese”
consist of about a half-dozen pages of Chicken,
Seafood, Pork, Beef,
Hot Pot, Vegetable/To-Fu, [sic]
Fried Rice, Porridge, Noodles/Lo
Mein, Noodles with Soup, and of course
Appetizers, *Beer, *Wine and
Desserts. The basic meats /fish/vegetables include
variations of Hot & Spicy, Szechuan,
Sweet & Sour, Black Bean Sauce,
Garlic Sauce, Brown Sauce, and Orange
Sauce dishes, just to name a few. |
|
|
|
Here are a few items from JJ’s menu:
Crab Meat & Bamboo Fungus with Shark’s Fin Soup ($10.95 - for
one,) Pig’s Blood & Intestine with Salted Vegetable Hot Pot ($8.95,) Kung
Pao Shrimp ($9.95,) Sea Cucumber with Slice Abalone [sic]
($35.95,) Whole Dungeness Crab with Spaghetti in Cheese Sauce (around
$16.00.) This whole crab is “drawn and quartered” and served - in
shell - over a bed of spaghetti dressed with a melted
cheese sauce. |
|
|
|
JJ Chinese Seafood Restaurant
is not terribly fancy, it’s rather plain. It is, however, very clean and
tidy. It’s a family restaurant in an older neighborhood. None of that
(except for the clean and tidy) really matters here, it’s all about the
fresh, authentic, well-served food. |

KARMA - Asian
fusion on Broadway |
|
Entering Karma is like walking into a dream. The dining
room is tastefully dark. High, dark, wood paneling on the
walls, behind tables, creates depth. A hostess-station/take-out
counter/alter commands attention with an orange, acrylic,
lit-from-within, sculpture of a large head (with large earrings,)
seemingly watching over the room. A ruby-red, crystal chandelier
hangs, mystically, above. Other brass-toned Asian art, a full size
Buddha and other artifacts adorn the restaurant. |

Cherry Creek Mall. A covered, open patio (fronting a bar) faces the
1st. Avenue shopping district. Tables around a fire-pit are perfect
for cocktails and appetizers, or full meals. Happy Hour is
celebrated in the bar area. |
|
The main dinning area is a large, dark space, reminiscent
of an ultra-modern, Las Vegas hotel-restaurant. Soothing lighting,
large, illuminated "ceiling hangings" and a huge, bright aquarium - above
a dozen-seat Sushi Bar - create a very serene ambiance. High-back,
platform booths around the room's perimeter provide cozy "dug-outs" for
intimate dinners. |

LITTLE MAN Ice Cream in Denver |
|
A Denver gem, just on the outskirts of downtown Denver,
Little Man Ice Cream is situated in a perfectly scaled
and finished, vintage, Cream-Can building. Reminiscent of 1940's - 50's
Hot Dog or Donut stands which were built to look like an old shoe or a
piece of food, this cream-can is fashioned from welded steel, then
finished to look just like the real thing. The thing is, the Cream-Can is
a perfect representation. This hip piece of pop-art has a
Ghirardelli Square
vibe! Yea, I know... |

For a corporate entity, this is a pretty good Italian
restaurant. The downtown location has a large, active bar, cozy
seating and decent food: the portions are large and the food is prepared
well, with all the right Southern Italian nuances. This restaurant
also has an excellent patio - for cocktails, dinning and people watching. |

This latest incarnation of the North Wood's Inn
"We moved to a new location in January of 1997" is sort-of a pine /
stone mountain-cabin, in the (almost) countryside. Plenty of room to
roam, inside and out. |
|
The North Woods Inn's dinning room is a big open area with
lots of windows, sort-of like a pine-paneled "mess hall." |
|
The North Woods Inn has been serving great steaks since

|
"Nowhere in the Denver area can you find a steak and prime
rib like you will eat at the North Woods Inn. The famous soup is homemade
daily and The Cottage Cheese is one of a kind. The Cottage Cheese mix and
the steak seasoning are both prepared in our kitchen from private recipes
created over 41 years ago. These seasonings may be purchased at the bar
and are also available at your local supermarkets." |

OK, so I like this place. The VERY ACCEPTABLE pasta dinners
are inexpensive and complete. Dinners include: salad or soup, a
fresh-baked-bread-loaf (you slice,) beverage and spumoni ice-cream.
The pasta dinners start at about $7.95. |
|
A Lasagna and Chicken Marsala dinner goes for
about $11.95. I enjoy The Pot Pourri which is a sauce
sampler: Browned Butter & Mizithra Cheese, Meat,
Clam and Marinara sauces on a pasta choice (Spaghetti, Angel
Hair, Whole Wheat or Gluten Free) - $9.65. |
|
|
|
I also like the ambience: A turn-of-the-century original
ceiling (*The Denver City Cable Railway Building,)
dark woods, old-world: sofas, chairs, tables, and tiffany-style lamps,
lamps with beads and fringe, and a dozen tables on an old train car make
this a fun, vibrant place to dine. It is a family restaurant, so
expect the kids (lots of 'em) to enjoy it also. The restaurant is
huge, so one can expect a bit of a circus atmosphere at times. On
the other side of the meatball, though, because of the restaurant's size
you are likely to find a quieter booth in an out of the way nook - there
are a half-dozen partitioned areas, including a large bar in The Old
Spaghetti Factory. |

Pagliacci's
is another old-school Italian restaurant that has been
around Denver forever. And, there's a reason for that, it's a good
restaurant. Situated in the same Denver's Little Italy location for
60 years this traditional Italian restaurant serves a superlative Minestrone soup;
One of the best in the city. The soup is served in a large tureen
with a ladle, help yourself. "Pagliacci's Minestrone Soup: House
specialty includes 14 types of vegetables, barley, beans, rice and beef
all slow simmered in a hearty broth with a complex blend of spices ($9.00,
ala carte.") The soup is included with all entrees. |
|
|
|
That's just for starters. Pagliacci's serves:
appetizers, salads, soups, pesce (not Joe - fish,) veal and chicken, and
of course pasta, house specialties, desserts, wine and a full selection of
adult beverages; There is also a bar/lounge. |
|
|
|
On the menu, for example: Calamari Fritti - Fried
squid served with a side of zesty red sauce ($9.50) or
Pescatore - Clams, shrimp,
mussels, scallops, and fresh tomatoes sautéed in olive oil, chili pepper,
and white wine all tossed with spaghetti (23.00,) or Veal
Saltimbocca - Sautéed with prosciutto, Fontina cheese, shallots, white
wine, and sage and white wine sauce - served with a side of spaghetti with
a choice of tomato sauce or butter and garlic (22.50.) |
|
Pasta Classico: Spaghetti alla Putanesca (*whore's
sauce) - A zesty blend of tomatoes, garlic, capers, Kalamata olives,
red pepper flakes, anchovy paste, and a touch of marinara - all tossed
with al dente pasta (16.50,) also linguini, manicotti,
gnocchi, ravioli and more. Pagliacci Specialties
include, Eggplant Parmigiana - Thick slices lightly breaded,
fried and then baked with tomato sauce, mozzarella and parmesan cheeses
(17.50.) |

Romano's is a Southern-Italian neighborhood family
restaurant serving traditional "red-sauce" pasta entrées, pizza
and more: |
|
*Spaghetti (thick or thin noodles,)
Rigatoni, Mostaccioli, Cheese Ravioli and Cheese Tortellini - all priced
at $10.95. |
|
All pastas are served with "Romano's fresh tomato sauce and
choice of meatballs, sausage or mushrooms." |
|
*Chicken and Veal dishes are also on the menu, such as: Veal
Parmagiana with a side of pasta - $16.95 |
|
*Baked Entrées, for example: Homemade Lasagna - $13.95
|
|
*Combination plates - $12.95 and $13.95 |
|
*House Specialties, such as: Fettuccine Alfredo - $13.95 |
|
Pizza, Calzones, Sandwiches, Soups, Salads and Appetizers
are also on the menu. |

your choice of soup or salad." |

|
The dining areas are warm and cozy with booths around the
hardwood-paneled rooms; The booths are elevated, solid and comfortable.
Tables fill the center space of the restaurant. If I have any
complaint, it would be that the dining areas are just a bit too light for
my taste (I would prefer dimmer candle-light) but this is first and
foremost a family restaurant so... Everything else about this restaurant
makes up for the excessive light. Maybe candles on the tables would
help. |
|
|
|
On January 24, 2010 we shared a Combination plate -
Romano's Triple Treat with (choice of thin or thick noodles) Homemade Spaghetti, Cheese
Ravioli and Eggplant Parmagiana, with meatballs [choice of meatballs,
sausage or mushrooms] salad and bread and butter ($13.95.) I was in
charge of the spaghetti. The thick homemade noodles were cooked
perfectly, the red sauce was rich, thick and tangy; The portion was huge
and the salad was fresh with bits of cheese/pepperoni/black-olive and a
cherry pepper. The portions are not only large, Romano's is very
generous with everything they serve, including a +portion of sauce with
the entrees. Everything else was
also fresh, tasty and authentically Italian. If you enjoy a traditional,
old-fashioned/old-school Southern-Italian dinning experience, this may be the
restaurant for you. The only thing missing is the red-checkered
tablecloth and candlelight. This is a charming, neighborhood, family restaurant. |

THAI BASIL - Asian Fusian Restaurant
in Denver, Colorado |
|
|
|
“Thai basil is a
cultivar group of basil. It has a more assertive taste than many other
sweet basils. The herb has small leaves, purple stems and a subtle
licorice or mint flavor”
read more from Wikipedia… Thai Basil
( 5 locations in the Denver/Colorado Springs area) is a
fresh “now” restaurant offering Thai-Asian-Fusion
cuisine.
In a perfect balance of
Yin & Yang (
陰陽, ) Thai Basil balances the old and
new. California-modern design mixes with old-burl
table tops, old-country cabinets, and Asian
bed-frames (used as a dining islands.) We have been to: The Thai Basil Hang Out Grill (3301
W 38th Ave.) and the Washington Park location (540
East Alameda Ave.) The East Alameda location has
the bed-frame; the TB Hang Out Grill
incorporates the burl wood tables. The Park Meadows Mall
location looks fantastic with a second story bank of bed-frame dining
booths. Resplendent with very expensive-looking burl wood tables,
chairs and cabinets, this location (we have not yet dined there) appears
to be the "Mother Ship"...

I acquired a serious appreciation for Pad Thai
in Southern California and Thai Basil
serves a beautiful Pad Thai.
Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese
menu items include: starters, salads,
soups, meats, seafoods,
vegetables, noodles, rice,
deserts and more. Thai Curries,
Vietnamese Rice Noodle Bowl, Szechuan Asian Eggplant,
Crispy Duck and Fried Rice are just a
few facets of the fusion. Some of my other favorites - besides Pad
Thai ($7.95) are: Coconut Soup, Satay
Chicken, Thai Spring Roll and Kung Pao
Chicken.
Thai Basil has a
full Bar with a good selection of Asian and domestic
beers. At the time of this post, several locations (that I know of) are serving: (HANG ON TO YOUR HAT) $.25
cent domestic beers and $.50 cent imported
beers. You have to order food & there is a limit. Call for more
