In the midst of Denver’s Little Asia on Federal Boulevard in
Denver, Colorado there’s a Crawling Crab. Actually this small, hip, modern,
Cajun-seafood restaurant beckons customers with a bright-red Dungeness Crab
on the sign. Funny how one can judge this restaurant by it’s cover (facade.)
It’s a good facade. |
Wooden dock-pilings, heavy ropes, even a Captain’s Wheel and a shark gives
one a not-so-subtle hint that this is a restaurant where one may find
seafood. Blue Crab, Dungeness Crab, Snow Crab, King Crab Legs, Lobster,
Crawfish (in season - call,) Shrimp, Clam and Oysters are on the menu -
served with a choice of four different seasonings, such as RAJUN CAJUN, in
varying degrees of heat (mild, medium & hot.) Market Price is the going rate
for most of the above. The shrimp runs around $8.99 for a full pound, and
they are huge.
Also Fried Wings, Chicken Tenders, Pop Pop Chicken, Baskets W/Cajun Fries:
Catfish or Shrimp or Calamari or Oysters,
then there’s Gumbo, soups and salads, and beer - the only adult beverage at
the present time.
Back to the shrimp, which I shall do (in actuality) A.S.A.P. - the pound of
huge: heads, tails and shell-on boiled shrimp is served in a plastic bag
(double-bagged) swimming in sauce, which, in my case, was The Crawling
Crab’s All-In sauce which consists of, as the name implies, a measure of
each of the three sauces, or… Let me say that this was the best - quality
and value - shrimp dish (even without the dish) I think I’ve ever had. The
shrimp were large, fresh and firm, the sauce was delicately seasoned, yet
fully flavored, the portion was HUGE. I’m thinking at least a dozen large
shrimp for $8.99. Bet this price won’t last. I was very happy with my
dinner.

FANELLI'S AMICI'S - Traditional-Neighborhood-Family-Italian |

Fanellis Amici's is a Italian neighborhood restaurant serving
traditional Southern Italian cuisine and pizza. The rather large
restaurant has a bank of cozy booths (white and black checkered table-cloths)
along one windowed wall, more booths across the room and tables in the
middle. It's a nice room for family dining. |
|
|
|
We were there one time and ordered a half-and-half pasta and
ravioli dinner. There is a choice of pastas: either ( thick) homemade
noodles or regular (thin) spaghetti. I opted for the thick noodles which
were cooked just right but were rather plain. The sauce was also rather
plain, maybe a bit of oregano will help it. It was not bad, at all, just
lackluster. On the other hand the sauce was very fresh with the taste of
fresh tomatoes, so maybe it's. The dinner comes with either two meatballs, 2
sausages or one of each. We went with the sausages. The large balls were
very tasty and prepared with the right ingredients - decent but a bit too
condensed, lighter would have been better. |
|
|
|
The dinner includes (a plain) salad or soup
or Garlic bread. *A little unusual to offer bread instead
of soup or salad but I'm not complaining at least there's a choice of
something; Although fresh and chilled the salad was plain with a few
rounds of pepperoni. It could have used a slice of tomato, or a bit of
onion or carrots. It was fairly large. The ravioli (about 6)
were fine and the Garlic bread was exceptional. ($10.75) |
|
|
|
I was satisfied and would like to return to try the pizza. |
|
|
|
Also from the menu: Spaghetti dinner (thick or thin) with two meat-balls or
sausage ($10.00,) other pasta dinners: Tortellini, Ravioli, Cavatelli or
Rigatoni w/meat $10,75, Also baked dishes and combinations ($10.75-$13,00,)
Steak Dinner with side of spaghetti ($23.00.) Nightly Specials
include, Monday and Wednesday night Spaghetti dinner ($7.75.) All
dinners are served with a salad or soup or Garlic Bread. *The menu
says (plain) bread is included with the dinner. |
|
|
|
Single Item Pizza: 10" - $9.50, 12" - $10.50 and 14" - $12.00; Other pizzas
from $10.00 - $15.25. |
|
|
|
Amici's also serves Lunches, Sandwiches, Large Salads, Cannolis, Calzones
and desserts - Full bar service and on site parking. |

Cozy Tavern, across from Sloan's Lake, serving Colorado Pizza
for decades; also serving Colorado Calzones, pasta, sandwiches etc.
This neat little tavern resembles a coastal bar. The "EDGE" and Bonnie
Brae Tavern have been serving a similar Colorado-style pizza forever.
The small horseshoe-shaped bar is lively with a steady group of regulars
manning their "posts." |
|
Copper mugs hanging from the racks reveal the fact that the
"Edge" serves the infamous "Moscow Mule" cocktail, which consists of
ginger beer, vodka and lime juice. The cocktail gained fame when
anti-Russian sentiment was prevalent in the US. Smirnoff invented and
promoted the drink to sell more vodka. Another FAV at the Edge is a
huge schooner of beer (about $3.25 - depending on the beer;) they also
have Happy Hour specials. |
|
The Edgewater Inn is very casual, and the prices are
moderate. There is a parking lot across the street. |

La Loma is the Real-Deal traditional, Mexican
restaurant in an old house (1887) in the *"old neighborhood." |
"La Loma is located in a distinctive Denver home that was constructed in
1887. The home accommodates a Cantina with a large fireplace, and three
unique dining rooms - The Colonial Room, The Victorian Room and The Galleria
are a blend of early American and Southwestern Cultures." [Excerpt is
from La Loma's website] |
|
|
|
The Old House is an island of tranquility and class in an old
North Denver neighborhood. Dark woods, exposed brick/beams, cozy
booths, and an antique, (working) taco machine provide the background for
this above average Mexican restaurant. |

Although the cuisine is Italian Lechuga's is

|
|
|
|
Lechuga's
(formerly Carbone's Pizza) is an Old School neighborhood Italian-style
Restaurant in what used to be *Denver's "Little Italy."
Around the 70s the neighborhood made a switch, it is now a
predominately Hispanic area. |
| If you enjoy a plate of
old-school Italian spaghetti and meatballs (or sausage)
with a dinner salad and garlic-toast for around $4.50, read on: Tuesdays at Lechuga's
offers such a deal (5pm - 9pm.) Add a Happy Hour glass of wine for another two bucks. The lounge/bar area at Lechuga's is a serious adult place, so we do
not recommended it for families/kids, however there is a family
dinning area on the other (north) side of the building. There
is a parking lot behind the restaurant. |
|
|
Buckets of
pasta, other pastas/entrees, square thin-crust
pizza,
sandwiches, salads & soups are available to take out or for
dining in. |
|
|
Lechuga's serves sausage sandwiches, very tasty. The other
night I had a sausage sandwich, They call it a Conoli (in Denver
conolis or connolles are sausage sandwiches rather than Italian
desserts.) It was tasty. In fact it's one of the best sausage sandwiches/subs in
Denver. It's two hunks of Lechuga's spicy sausage wrapped in a
buttery/yeasty dough sandwiched between cheese and pieces of
jalapeño? pepper. I'm not sure if this was the Little Devil or
the Conoli. Whatever it's called it definitely will be called
for again. |
|
|
Menu/prices may have changed since this posting,
call. Once again "Although the cuisine is Italian Lechuga's is
primarily a
Latino restaurant & bar." |

This is a fairly cool Capital Hill area tavern. It
formerly was The Lair
Lounge way back in the 60s. It's cozy and dark inside with a
bunch of
booths, lots of wood, and TVs . A huge patio out front
provides a good spotfor people watching. There are several 2/4/1/ Happy Hours.
You can find a secluded booth to hide away here for a few hours.
The crowd is young and hip. |

Patsy's is an Old-School traditional (1921,) neighborhood Italian
Restaurant in an area which used to be Denver's "Littlie Italy."
(Think "MOONSTRUCK") The
3600 block of Navajo is home to a half-dozen art galleries.
The First Friday of each month brings crowds of Hep-Cat art lovers
to the galleries for food and wine, as well as art viewing. |

Several Chinese
acquaintances recommended Star Kitchen when I asked the probing
question "which is the best Chinese restaurant in Denver." |
|
| Rather plain
and uninspiring, the interior of Star Kitchen is basic with |
| the exception
of several large fish-tanks in the rear, holding live Lobster,
|
| Crab and
fish. It does - somehow - have a San Francisco vibe. |
|
| The Star
Kitchen is located in a small nondescript strip-mall with (plenty
of) parking places in front. |
|
|
|
The Star Kitchen's enormous MENU has everything from Dim Sum -
Chicken Feet with Black Bean Sauce to fresh Lobster, and everything
in-between. Literally everything you've ever seen on a Chinese
menu is there. |
|
Sesame Chicken..........$8.95 for instance, served with
rice. |
| The flavor is
perfect, the portion is large and the dinning experience is
authentic. Appetizers, soups, Hot Pots, Sake, drinks and of
|
| course
chop-sticks are available. The Hot Pots will definitely work
when the snows hit Denver. |
