This will be a sad day for those of us who experienced the Old Las Vegas and, maybe, preferred it. The “Dust” was a home away from home to me for many years. In fact for a short time it was my home: I lived in an RV in the RV Park, when there was an RV Park, or I lived in an RV in the North parking lot, among the semi’s…Who remembers RALPH’S DINER (a 50’s Diner where the lovely Candace and a host of other lovlies entertained us as well as fed us, and would occasionally stop working and dance to a Little Richard tune on the juke?)…How about the sensational STARLIGHT LOUNGE with it’s twinkling starry ceiling, moody waitresses and great entertainment groups like “WILDLIFE!”…When WILDLIFE was playing in the 90’s the DUST was the place to be, at least for us common-folk…The KENO ROOM was fabulously intimate and cozy: I remember the time (I was probably doing a bit too much gambling) when I walked past the Keno Board and (unconsciously) turned to bow my head and genuflect before continuing - true story…I remember: that fantastic Black-haired, Irish chick waitress who worked the Keno Room as well as the slots…That blonde, unapproachable (Playmate of the Year type,) kitten/lioness who worked out of the West side-bar…She was a great beauty… The Asian cocktail gal, with the overbite, who worked the lounge and the machines… Those looser-than-loose video-poker machines that kept giving and giving…The Hot Tubs at midnight…The squirting fountains out front…Bob Newhart, BB King, Chicago, Suzi (The Stardust’s Entertainment Director, of sorts,) Wayne Newton, of course…And the SIGN, the fantastic STARDUST SIGN, like a great fire burning in the desert…
LAS VEGAS CASINO DEATH WATCH (Self-explanatory Website) offers more information about Las Vegas hotels / casinos that are or may be closing… I have to sign off for now, I need a “tissue.”
