The Plaza Hotel at Number One Main Street is on the Western edge of  Fremont Street - at The Fremont Street Experience.  It once housed the train station at a time when downtown Las Vegas was a vibrant, desirable part of the city.  The Plaza, like much of the downtown area has seen better times.  The Freemont Street Experience has turned things around, somewhat, for the casinos along Fremont Street, however the Plaza is like a tired old lady who bravely "puts on her face" for the public.  It once was a grand hotel, now overshadowed by today's extremes.

50 cent referred to the price of a Shrimp Cocktail from the little cafeteria, not a rapper.  The Shrimp Cocktail was a favorite among the downtowners.  A bank of Penny slots were available, even though most other casinos shunned them.  "Pennies" made a comeback this year.  That was the way it was.  (this information is from 2005)

Omaha Lounge
Continuous entertainment from 12:00noon to 6:00am.

The Plaza is still a good place to spend an evening.  The Omaha Lounge is a throwback to the past - when free lounge shows were the norm.  One show in particular is worth seeing: The Dusty Barron Show.  Dusty Barron is one of the most talented showman in Las Vegas.  With a virtual menagerie of electronic musical devices, his "definitely plugged in" guitar, and amazing vocal control he locks you in from the first note or utterance.  To say that he is a man of a thousand voices would be a serious understatement since he also produces a similar number of instrumental and everyday sounds with his electric guitar.  At times, he uses the guitar like a control board  manipulating a Frankensteinian synthesizer through miles of electrical cables.  At other times he plays the guitar like the String master that he is.

Although a bit of a ham - when in comedy mode he shoots jokes out like rapid fire, high caliber bullets.  When he gets serious with a song, his voice and manner mesmerizes you.  He WAS Ray Charles the other night singing "Georgia On My Mind."

This amazing guy has (literally) a hat full of props as well as the 100 gallon foam rubber hat that he sometimes wears.  The show is free but not cheap, even if he's a one man band.   Dusty Barron is a "must see" who you'll want to see again.  This cat has paid his dues, and pays and pays...
