My
Brother's Bar, on the Western edge of downtown Denver claims to have the Best
Hamburger in Denver. The claim just might be true. The large,
juicy hunk of
beef or buffalo (bison) is served with a condiment-caddy containing:
relish, pickles, sliced onion, peppers, ketchup and mustard as well as
napkins, salt, pepper and utensils, |
|
After a great deal of thought (oh-yea,)
I've discovered that one of the reasons their burger is so pleasing - other
than it's just plain good taste - is because of the condiment-caddy.
First, it's psychologically comforting to have access to extra food, should
you require it. It's like money in the bank. Secondly, it's
about the ritual: when the burger is brought to your table with the
condiment-caddy, a world of choices opens up. One slice of onion, or
two. One spoonful of the sweet relish or three pickles. If
half-way through the burger you decide to switch gears and go for two hot
peppers and another scoop of relish, the choice is yours. You
participate in the construction of your burger. You participate in the
ritual... |
| Sandwiches, soups, salads, fries,
"nice" onion rings etc. are also available along with an extensive list of beers,
wines, hard hootch. and sodas for the kids in this family-friendly
restaurant. At Girl Scout Cookie selling time, they sell cookies. |
|
Classical music on the sound system sets the mood.
Food is served
in the main room (booths and tables in heavy, dark woods,) in the bar area
(more dark woods) and on the (seasonal) patio
(trees, flowers and even a squirrel or two in the spring and summer.) |
| |
| MY BROTHER'S BAR is a very creative environment.
It's not all that difficult to imagine:
Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque - at the corner table - in a heated
conversation about Cubism---or
Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappely having an
Absinthe, in a back
booth, after a performance at The Hot Club. |
| The
brothers have created a beautiful world here. From the tasteful
Classical music, the dark rich woods and splashes of amber light reflected
from liquor bottles on the back bar, to the food and drink and the
location itself which gives the restaurant hip credibility and validation,
the brothers have proven to be Master tavern-keepers. |

|
There is a reference to the
location in Jack Kerouac's book "ON THE ROAD." Neal Cassady lived in Denver.
|
| |
| Although MY BROTHER'S BAR is "just" a booze, sandwich and burger
place, it is one of the best restaurant / taverns in Denver!

| Last trip - July
27, 2009 - I panicked when I saw the Steer Burger on a DIFFERENT
bun. Someone said something about a situation with the bun
supplier. After a few moments of unrest, I was OK...The burger was
fine! |
