The Gypsy Den is a coffee-shop/restaurant/beat-cafe, where you can do morning coffee and late night dinner/wine with later-night poetry or music.  This is a unique place.  It is the REAL DEAL.
Located in Santa Ana's "Artist's Village," the Gypsy Den is as comfortable and cozy as the parlor in your own home - if you have a comfortable and cozy home with a parlor.
Old stuffed couches and sofas, as well as tables (and chairs,) provide part of the ambience.  Other accoutrements include lots of dark wood, original (COFFEE-HOUSE) art, colorful lamps, rugs and tapestries, an upright piano (Tom Waits took it for a spin, so I've heard) and an outdoor patio, replete with verdant flora, overlooking the plaza of the Artist's Village, where a new Plaza fountain is under construction.
The food is basically ok.  The portions are generous and fairly priced.  Some of the bakery items could stand some improvement.  The coffee is fine - ask for a  huge ceramic mug.  It's not really about the food in this place.
If you are an artist, musician or poet or just feel like one, this is the place for you (and me!)
There is a second location:
The Gypsy Den Cafe @ the L.A.B.
2930 Bristol St.
Costa Mesa, CA 92626
