Charlie Brown's Bar and Grill (in
the
Colburn Hotel - circa 1940s) in Denver's Capital Hill area is a "Big
City" tavern with a piano-bar in the main room and a covered patio
out-front... Rich dark woods, subdued lighting, cozy tables and the
piano-bar (sing-a-long) enrich the ambience. It's a Great Escape from
Denver, and from the past few decades. |
|
| Charlie Brown's has a Los
Angeles hotel vibe. Think tavern in the Ambassador Hotel. |

Everything from Lobster and Steak dinners to
fries, and Mexican food, Greek food, pizza, burgers, sandwiches,
salads, breakfasts etc. etc. etc are served... |
|
|

Full bar/food service is available
in the lounge (of course) and on the patio. The bar is a neat
rectangle with stools on the east and west sides, a serving station to the
south and booze to the north. The colorful, lively bar is set between
two rooms. |

Happy hour specials are offered,
call for details. |

Keep in mind that this is a tavern and not a
great restaurant, although the food is adequate, some things are better than
others. |

I usually order the Cobb Salad which
is served with all the right ingredients, including meat and Blue cheese
crumbles - for around $8.00...This is one of
the best Cobb's in Denver. The portions are
large to huge... |

The patio wraps around two old-brick walls of the hotel.
The flagstone and cement floor, the maroon, canvas [roof] and outdoor steel
tables/chairs only add to the ambience of the patio. The veritable, verdant view
of the lush landscaping on the grounds of the nearby apartments makes a very
pleasant overview and the half wall - west and north, makes a cozy nest to
settle into... |

This is an older, well established restaurant
with distinctive ties to the past: |
|
|
Local Denver Beatnik
Neal Cassady,
Jack Kerouac and
Allen Ginsberg hung out at Charlie Brown's in the 50s. Jack
Kerouac stayed at the hotel around the time he wrote his famous novel *On
the Road. |
|
| Say what you may say about these
dudes, they had one thing that seems to be lacking in so many of our
high-powered, highly-educated, successful citizens: honesty... |
| *I saw the original scroll at the
Denver Public Library. It's not altogether unlike a roll of butcher's
paper, at least in shape and size. (The novel was typed on
sheets of paper which were taped together end to end, hence "scroll.") bc |
| I always thought that the scroll was
analogous to "THE ROAD." In other words: the long scroll
resembled a long straight road. bc |

If you enjoy cocktails on the patio at sunset, a moderately
priced yet fulfilling dinner, sitting around the piano - singing the old
standards, and most of all the ambience of an old hotel tavern, this might be the place for you.... |
