Icy Watermelon Sorbet
Icy Watermelon Sorbet

I got the basic recipe for this Icy Sorbet from Carol Alt’s raw food cookbook. I embellished the recipe with a few new ingredients.

ICY WATERMELON SORBET

Ingredients:
1/2 seedless watermelon
1/2 medium lime
1/4 cup orange juice
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
dash of cayenne pepper
1 tsp. sugar-free, Raspberry Jell-O
water

– scoop out the pulp from the watermelon and puree in a blender or food processor until liquefied, retain the shell
– add the juice from the lime, orange juice, cinnamon, cayenne and Jell-O
– blend again, adding water if necessary
– pour into an ice-cube tray and freeze
– when the mixture is frozen, remove the cubes and place them in the blender
*blend until the “sorbet” has the consistency of a snow cone
– place in a pint deli-container or used ice-cream container and freeze

– remove the container and let stand, at room temperature, 20-30 minutes before you’re ready to serve; the mixture should have the consistency of slushy, snow cone ice.
– mix it up and place the icy-sorbet into the watermelon shell to serve or serve it in an ice-cream dish
*pulse the blender while pushing the cubes into the blade with a wooden spoon

Denver artist Jesse DuBois hard at work at Whole Foods Market

I snapped this photo of Denver artist Jesse Dubois at the Whole Foods store on South Colorado Blvd. Jesse had an easel set up in the cafe section of the market. The (accidental) sepia tones in the photograph are not altogether unlike the colors in some of Jesse’s pastels. I think the back-lighting created the effect.

I first met Jesse years ago when he had an easel set up in a shopping mall. He was trying to work between periodic harrassments from mall-punks. Jesse has certainly paid his “dues,” and he has evolved into a fine artist.

One of his major works, a bronze sculpture of a female, Denver physician, can be seen at the end of the train-line in the Five Points area of Denver.

The following link has some information on Jesse, and one can view more of his work:

Balloon Boy’s father, Richard Heene’s theme song “The Psyience Detective”

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

I heard this tune (Richard Heene’s theme song) on the radio and had to post it. It’s a simple old-school- rock-style song with a “Creedence-like” driving (simple/basic) lead guitar.

The following was copped from TMZs Youtube channel …

“Richard Heene was so committed to getting his own reality show, he even went so far as to come up with his theme music — because every wacky amateur scientist/handyman needs good theme music.”

“Heene worked with a guy named Smokey Miles (and Meson Music BMI) to compose theme songs in 2005 for two shows Heene cooked up — “The Psyience Detective” and “The Contractor.” And they are gems!”

“The first, which Richard played bass on, goes a little something like this:”

“When you want to learn the mysteries of how things work
Weather, the planets, the whole universe.
Tune into the show, that’s really effective
Watch Richard Heene — Science Detective!”

The second tune is sort of a country-style talking ramble – not as interesting.

Frank Marinos Divas Las Vegas
Frank Marino's Divas Las Vegas

Since Frank Marino’s drag show at the Riviera Hotel closed “way-back-when,” there has been a good deal of speculation as to when and where the lady might surface.
Claire Voyant ends the speculation in an October 16th post:

“Not at all surprising, after the impressive Labor Day weekend “test” of Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas revue (more than 5,000 people saw the new show over four nights), the Imperial Palace has made Divas a part of their ongoing entertainment lineup. Beginning tomorrow night (Saturday, October 17th), Frank Marino plus a cast of 13, will take the 10 p.m. time slot in the __-[sic] seat showroom. In addition to Marino, who, as producer, Mistress of Ceremonies/ Hostess, is the glue that holds Divas together, the performers are made up of impersonators Derrick Barry as Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, Kenneth Blake as Madonna and Dolly Parton, Larry Edwards as Tina Turner and Beyonce, Sammy Gonzales as Liza Minnelli, Joseph Santellano as Bette Midler and Shirley Bassey, Steven Wayne as Cher and Celine Dion, and Crystal Woods as Diana Ross and Whitney Houston. The Frank Marino Dancers are Jonathon Arsenault, Jeremy Butcher, Michael Cannarata, Stephen Lowry, Jason Mckenzie, and Paul Pratt. Choreography is by Gary Thomas (for the Britney Spears and Lady Gaga numbers) and Brad Barnes (all other numbers). Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas joins the family-friendly Japanese hit “Muscle Musical,” Matsuri, and the Australian “boy band” Human Nature, presented by Smokey Robinson. Matsuri plays at 4 p.m., Wednesdays through Mondays, with an added 8 p.m. show on Fridays. Tickets are $49.99 and $59.99. Human Nature show times are 8 p.m., Saturdays through Thursdays, and tickets are $49.95 and $59.95. Divas plays at 10 p.m., Saturdays through Thursdays. Ticket prices are $69 and $79. “Who knows beauty: Rush Limbaugh or Perez Hilton?” Story is from LA Times’ Richard Abowitz.

The following story is a repost from (The LA Times) Richard Abowitz’s Movable Buffet.

“Does it say anything that the Miss USA pageant picks Perez Hilton as a celebrity judge and Miss America goes another way?”

“This press release today from the Miss America organization:”

“The Miss America Organization (MAO) announced today that Rush Limbaugh has been named as one of the national judges for the 2010 Miss America Pageant, which will be held at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas on Saturday, January 30 and broadcast live on TLC.”

“I admit Rush Limbaugh is not my image of a beauty judge. On the other hand Perez Hilton single-handedly made the Miss USA pageant at Planet Hollywood back in April a national news story. I don’t think Limbaugh has that kind of cheek. But we will see.”

Email: jeast@thelodgecasino.com

One of the best attributes of The Lodge Casino’s Seasons Buffet is the decor. One gets the feeling that one is in a steak-house rather than in a buffet. OK, so it’s a buffet and it looks like a buffet, however, it’s one of the warmest rooms around, and that includes the buffets in Las Vegas. This room has windows

Light-sconces and black-framed, foody-prints on the walls, (some) wood-paneling and subtle-r lighting than most buffet rooms give this place a feeling of traquility amidst the chaos of the casino monster.

The food seems to be of a good quality – maybe even a notch above the norm. The standard salad-bar, and specialty stations are well stocked and varied; The dessert bar offers a choclate fountain, and sugar-free desserts as well as not-so-sugar-free desserts.

The staff must be well managed since they seem to be resonably happy and friendly.

“Enjoy all-you-can-eat Crab Legs for dinner at the Seasons Buffet! This delicious, succulent crab is available seven nights a week! You can also sample the wide variety of other fantastic selections the Seasons Buffet has to offer. Choose from our action grill station, carving station, made-to-order pasta and omelets, specialty salads, savory soups, and more. Special dessert features chocolate fountains – white and dark for that sweet tooth in all of us! Join us for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, or Sunday Brunch and see why everyone is talking about the Seasons Buffet.”

Time for another Full Moon! The moon will be 100% full October 4, 2009 at 12:11 A.M. Las Vegas time.

zuni_art_thumb

OUT WEST:
“American Indians gave names to each of the full moons to keep track of the passing year. The names are associated with the entire month until the next full moon occurs. Since a lunar month averages 29 days, the dates of the moons change from year to year. Here are titles most closely associated with calendar months”
According to Western Washington University the name for the October moon in the Zuni language is: li’dekwakkwya lana or big wind moon.

algonquin_art_thumb

Back East:
“Historically the Native Americans who lived in the area that is now the northern and eastern United States kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to the recurring full Moons. Each full Moon name was applied to the entire month in which it occurred. These names, and some variations, were used by the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior.” read more from The Old Farmer’s Almanac
The Harvest Moon is the full Moon nearest the autumnal equinox and is bright enough to allow finishing all the harvest chores.

The moon will be 100% full on October, 4 at 12:11 A.M. Las Vegas time.

The [c.2009-Adobe Moon in the City] poster is available for purchase. The full moon in this poster was photographed in Las Vegas in the 90s. The image was inserted into it’s “frame” with a Photoshop type application. The poster is 24″x36″.
